"son" in English. The name "Reuben" is usually translated as
"see a son!" or "Look! A son!".)
A son of Jacob. He was
the oldest son of Jacob by his wife Leah. Jacob was married to another woman at
the time, Leah's sister Rachel. (Polygamy was legal at the time.) Jacob preferred
Rachel over Leah, and he didn't really love Leah. The only reason he married
Leah in the first place was because her father tricked him into it. But Jacob
really preferred Rachel. She was his favorite wife, and Leah knew it. Leah
wanted to give Jacob a son so that Jacob would love her too. She finally gave
