Potiphar
The captain of the
guard under the pharaoh of Egypt. (37:36; 39:1) He bought Joseph as a slave.
(also 37:36; 39:1) Joseph served Potiphar, and did a good job. Potiphar soon
made Joseph the overseer of the house. Then Potiphar's wife seduced Joseph.
Joseph declined her. The wife falsely accused Joseph of rape. Potiphar believed
his wife, and Joseph was put in prison. (chapter 39)
There is a discrepancy as to whom he bought Joseph from. 37:36 says that he
bought Joseph from the Midianites. But later, 39:1 says that he bought him from
the Ishmaelites.

Joseph's father-in-law. He was the priest of the temple in the city of On. His
daughter Asenath was given by the pharaoh to Joseph as a wife. (41:45,50; 46:20)
