Above: The building of the ark
Chapter 6:
Now many
people live on earth, but they are mostly wicked people. Evil is everywhere. so
God decides to destroy the world. But he finds one good man, a man named Noah.
He has three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japeth. God tells Noah "I am going to
cause rains to flood the earth and destroy everything on it. Build an ark for
your family. Put two of every living creature into it." Noah and his family do this.
Chapter 7:
The flood comes.
The earth is flooded, and the world is destroyed, except for everyone on the
ark: Noah, his wife, Noah's three sons, and their wives.
Chapter 8:
The flood
subsides, and the ark rests on dry land. (According to 8:4, it rests on one of
the mountains of Ararat. Archeologists have allegedly found it on Mt. Ararat in eastern
Turkey, near the borders of Russia and Iran. They have found a vessel there, and
it has not been positively identified. But some archeologists believe that it
may be Noah's Ark.) Noah and company emerge from the ark.
Chapter 9:
God tells Noah and
his family to repopulate the earth. Animals may be killed and eaten for food,
but blood shall not be eaten because blood is associated with life. Finally God
decrees that murder is wrong.
God promises
Noah that he will never again send
a flood to destroy the human race. As a token of his covenant, God puts a
rainbow in the sky. "Whenever there is a rainbow, it will be a reminder of
my promise."
Noah and his descendants repopulate the
earth. Noah's son Ham has a son named Canaan. One night, Noah gets drunk and passes
out in his tent, naked. His son Ham
tells the other sons, Shem and Japeth, what happened. Shem and Japeth cover
their father. When Noah awakens, he blesses Shem and Japeth, and curses Canaan.
Chapter 10:
Noah's family
has descendants, and they repopulate the earth. From them come the separate
nations on the earth.
