Chapter 1:
God creates heaven and earth:
light, water, land, plants, sun, moon, stars, sea creatures, and land creatures.
Finally he creates man in his own image, and gives him dominion over the
animals. These creations take six days.
Right: God creates Adam
Chapter 2:
On the seventh
day, God rests. During the six days, God creates the Garden of Eden, and lets
man live in it. (According to 2:10, a river flows through the Garden,
and out of it. Then that river separates into four rivers. Two of those rivers are the Tigris
and the Euphrates. By today's map, the garden would be located somewhere around Turkey.)
The garden has trees in it. God says "You may eat the fruit of every tree in the garden except
the tree of knowledge of good and evil. If you eat the fruit from that tree, you
will surely die."
Then God decides that it's
not good for the man to be alone. He tries to create a companion for the man. He
creates various animals, but none are really suitable.
(It is at about this point when the man is called "Adam".)
So God takes one of Adam's ribs, and creates a woman. She is fine as a companion for him.
Chapter 3:
A serpent tempts
the woman to eat the forbidden fruit. She gives in. Then she tempts Adam to
eat the fruit, and he gives in as well. When God discovers what has happened, he expels
them out of the garden.
He says to the woman "In labor, you shall bear
children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over
you." He says to Adam "You shall live off the land. With work, you
shall get your food from it. You shall do this all the days of your life, until
you return to the ground. You shall return to the ground because you were taken
out of it. Dust you are, and to dust you shall return."
Adam gives the woman a name: "Eve". They are expelled to the east side of Eden.
Chapter 4:
Adam and Eve have
two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain grows jealous of Abel, and kills him. God drives
Cain away. Cain settles in the land of Nod, which is east of Eden. Eve gives birth
to a third son, Seth. Cain has a family, and the
earth's population grows. Later, Seth has a son named Enos.
Above: Cain and Abel
Chapter 5:
Adam and Eve have
other sons and daughters. Seth has a family of his own,
and the earth's population grows more. Among Seth's descendants is a man named
Noah. Noah has three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japeth.
