Pi Hahiroth
One of the places where

Pithom
A city in the land of
Goshen in Egypt. It was one of the treasure cities built by the Israelites for
the Pharaoh. (1:11)
Puah
A Hebrew midwife.
The pharaoh of Egypt saw that the Israelites were too
numerous, and could be a threat. So he made a law that the Israelites are to be
slaves. Then he spoke to Puah, and another Hebrew midwife, Shiphrah. He ordered
them "Whenever you deliver a Hebrew child, if it's a male child, then kill
it." But the midwives disobeyed this cruel law. God rewarded the midwives
by making them houses. (1:8-21)

The father-in-law of

Raamses (also called Rameses)
A city in the land of Goshen in Egypt. It was one of the treasure cities built
by the Israelites for the Pharaoh. (1:11) The Israelites began their journey

Red Sea
A long sea between
northeastern Africa and western Arabia. At the end of the plague of locusts, God
cast all the locusts there. (10:19)
Later, during
the Exodus, the Israelites moved to the western shore of the Red Sea. The
pharaoh and some soldiers chased the Israelites, intending to bring them back to
Egypt. They caught up to the Israelites at the Red Sea. The Israelites were
trapped by the Egyptian soldiers on one side and by the Red Sea on the other.
God had Moses stretch his hand over the sea. The waters
of the sea divided, and formed a strip of land in the middle. The Israelites
walked through the sea. The Egyptians chased them. When the Israelites reached
the other side of the sea, the waters came back, and drowned the Egyptians.
(chapters 13-15)
Rephidim
One of the places where
the Israelites stopped on the route of the Exodus. Here, they were thirsty. So
God brought water out of a rock.
Soldiers from Amalek fought with the Israelites. God
helped Israel win. Moses predicted that they would have more trouble with Amalek.
Later, Moses' father-in-law Jethro joined the Israelites, along with Moses' wife
and children. Jethro noticed how Moses was the judge when there was a dispute.
He told Moses "You and the people with you will wear yourselves out. You
can't do it alone." He helped Moses arrange a council of judges to decide
matters. Then Jethro went home. (chapters 17-18)
From there, the Israelites went to Mt. Sinai. (19:2)
Reuben
One of the twelve sons
of Jacob/Israel, and the head of one of the subdivisions of the Israelites. He relocated to Egypt
along with his brothers before the Book of Exodus takes place. (1:1-2) He had four sons:
Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. (6:14)
Reuel
Another name for the
priest of Midian who was Zipporah's father. (There
is a discrepancy as to the name of the person. In most passages, he is
called Jethro. But 2:18 gives his name as Reuel.)
Sabbath Day
The seventh day
of the week was called the Sabbath day. It was to remind the Israelites that God
had created the world in six days, and had rested on the seventh. (20:11; 31:17)
The importance of the Sabbath day is given in one of the Ten Commandments. No
one was to do any work that day. (20:8-11) Whoever did would be put to
death. And anyone who profaned the Sabbath would be put to death. (31:14-15;
35:2) Also, people were not allowed to burn fire in their houses on the Sabbath
Day. (35:3)
On the Sabbath day, no manna fell. (16:22-30)

At one point, the Bible refers to "the sea".

Sin
A wilderness near Mt.
Sinai where the Israelites stopped during the exodus. (16:1) When they got
hungry here, God fed them manna from the sky. (chapter 16)
Sinai, Mt.
The final stop for
the Israelites in the Book of Exodus. They stayed at the foot of the mountain.
Moses often went up, where God would speak to him. (chapters 19-40)
The mountain is also called Mt. Horeb (3:1, 17:6, and
33:6.), and the "mountain of God". (3:1)
The location of Mt. Sinai is a little confusing. 3:1
says that is located west of Midian. 17:6 says that it is at Rephidim. 19:2 says
that it is in the wilderness of Sinai.

A Levite. A son of

The Israelites' first
stop on the route of the Exodus. (12:37) From there, they went to Etham. (13:20)

Tabernacle
The portable
shrine that the Israelites built as a place for worship. It was made by them
according to God's command. (25:8)
The Israelite in
charge of the building was Bezeleel (also called Bezelel). He was aided by
Aholiab (also called Oholiab). (31:1-11) He built it according to a design that
God had given Moses on Mt. Sinai. (chapters 25-27)
Uri
A Judite. The son of Hur,
and the father of Bezeleel (also called Bezelel). (31:2; 35:30) He was one of
the builders of the tabernacle. (38:22)
Urim and Thummin
An oracle
for discovering God's will, worn by the high priest inside the breastplate of judgment.

Uzziel
A Levite. A son of
Kohath. (6:18) The father of Mishael, Elzaphan, and Zithri. (6:22)
Zebulun
One of the twelve
sons of Jacob/Israel, and the head of one of the subdivisions of the Israelites. He relocated to
Egypt along with his brothers before the Book of Exodus takes place. (1:1-3)
Zichri
A Levite. A son of
Izhar. (6:21)
Zipporah (The name comes from the Hebrew word "tsi'por",
which means "bird" in English.)
One of the seven
daughters of Jethro, the priest of Midian. She became Moses' wife.
Moses fled to the country of Midian after he was branded an
outlaw. (2:11-15) There, he met seven women who were the
daughters of the priest of Midian. One of them was Zipporah. Moses helped the
daughters water their father's flock. They introduced him to their father, the
priest of Midian. (2:16-20) (There
is a discrepancy as to the name of the priest. In most passages, he is
called Jethro. But 2:18 gives his name as Reuel.)
Moses married Zipporah. She bore Moses a son named
Gershom (also called Gershon). (2:21-22)
When Moses to returned to Egypt, Zipporah and Gershom
went with him. (4:20) On the way, Zipporah circumcised Gershom. For this, she
called Moses "a bridegroom of blood". (4:24-26)
Zipporah and Gershom later went back to Jethro. Later, when the Israelites were
at Rephidim, Jethro visited Moses, and brought Zipporah and Gershom back to him.
With them came a second son of Moses and Zipporah, named Eliezer. (18:2-6)
